Basic symmetry principles are common to all incommensurate structures. Symmetry principles which apply to modulated structures defined. Combination of resonance theory with experimental data from both X-ray single-crystal diffraction study and high-resolution electron microscopy provides new insights on the real structure of modulated mineral solutions.--Modified journal abstract.
