A continuous mechanism involving the development of a metastable short-range-ordered modulated structure. The activation energy is found to be 120+ or -10 kcal/mole (500+ or -40 kJ/mole). X-ray diffractrometry, transmission electron microscopy and IR spectrometry show that ordering proceeds smoothly with time.--Modified journal abstract.
