Metamorphosed manganese deposit near Bald Knob, North Carolina. Refinement of one galaxite reveals that Mn is located on tetrahedral sites and Al on octahedral sites and that galaxite is therefore normal spinel. Jacobsite also a normal spinel at low temperatures. Chemical and experimental data available for (Mg,Zn,Mg,Fe (super 2+) )(Fe (super 3+) ,Al) 2 O 4 spinels suggest that ferrites show extensive solid solution and are separated from aluminate solid solutions by wide solvi at metamorphic temperatures.--Modified journal abstract.
